London Liverpool Street Platform Extension Project
London Liverpool Street Platform Extension Project
Enable Welfare supplied all the off-grid cabins – including offices and canteens – for sister company Enable Infrastructure’s acclaimed work as part of the huge Crossrail project.
Enable Infrastructure (formerly BCM Construction) was nominated as Rail team of the year at the 2022 Rail Business Awards for its work to extend two existing platforms and decommission another at London Liverpool Street. The extensions were needed so that the station could accommodate the MTR Elizabeth Line’s new 205m Full Length Unit (FLU) trains.
For Enable Welfare, this was a short, intense period of work at one of the UK’s busiest railway stations. While cabins brought in for major works in the rail industry are usually in place for long periods, for this unique project we had to deploy the cabins in double-quick time and then remove them just as rapidly once the work was complete.
Adding to the challenge was the nature of this central London site in the Congestion Charge Zone. With access tight and tricky, we used a FORS Gold-accredited haulier with Euro 6 emission standard lorries.
The emphasis on the environment continued once we had everything safely on site: Enable Welfare created a hybrid power set-up that incorporated battery storage to avoid the need to run large gensets at night, reducing noise, pollution and fuel burn.
